History

For the past 30 years, the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups has been working to voice the concerns of seniors and create good public policy to meet their needs.  We helped launch SeniorCare — Wisconsin’s popular prescription drug assistance program that helps seniors afford their medications. We fought for the passage of a state budget so people can continue to receive SeniorCare and the expansion of Family Care will proceed as planned.

The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups continues to fight to ensure that seniors have access to affordable prescription drugs. We fight to be the voice of seniors to advocate on your behalf on issues such as SeniorCare and Family Care. We fight to assist people access programs and services such as Medicare or Social Security through our Benefit Specialist Program. We fight so we can continue to assist seniors through our Legal Services Department, Guardianship Support Center, Wisconsin’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Project as well as financial and pension rights. All of these programs exist because of our advocacy efforts. We fight to make changes so that it better meets the needs of seniors throughout the country and we vow to continue in the years to come.

The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, was born out of an urgent need for advocacy  for Wisconsin's senior citizens. In March of 1977, over 4,000 seniors rallied at the state capitol in Madison, asking legislators and the Governor to appropriate state funding for senior centers, nutrition programs, transportation, home health care and property tax relief.  We were heard!  We also recognized that to maintain these programs we would have to remain organized and ready to act. The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups was born the following year (1978) as the voice of seniors in Wisconsin.

Since our early beginnings, the state of Wisconsin has been recognized as having some of the best programs for seniors in the country due, in large part, to laws and budgets approved at the state level of government. CWAG plays a vital role in the process by voicing the needs of seniors and empowering them to express their own views and concerns.
